Our Early Scans Expained

Are you visiting our clinic for an early pregnancy scan? For the privacy of our ladies, we do not mix our firstScan sessions with ladies coming for scans such as gender or 4D. We have a range of packages to suit all ladies , including viability, dating, reassurance, previous miscarriage and IVF. At 6 weeks, baby is only around 4mm so is very small. Baby has doubled in size to 8mm by week 7, so you may leave us feeling more reassured than at 6 weeks, due to how clear we can see baby. Because this is an early pregnancy scan, baby is very small. Internal scans offer much more accurate results and are offered to ladies under 10 weeks. You may decline an internal scan if you wish by just telling your sonographer.

Ultrasound Accuracy for Predicting Due Dates

We were told by our GP to book the booking appointment any time after week 9. From the net it looked like the booking appointment and scan would take place at the same time. Given that we wanted to have a nuchal scan we opted for a date when we thought we would be 12 weeks. One of Daddy’s work colleagues is also pregnant and is a few months ahead of us and also at the Womens’.

Daddy’s not so subtle questioning gave the game away but fortunately she became a mine of information and set us straight in time to get our appointment changed.

All women will be offered a dating scan, and an 20 week fetal anomaly ultrasound scan, discovered that the baby looked small and that the dates might be wrong. The NHS Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme now recommends that.

It involves high frequency sound waves which are transmitted through the skin and reflected by the internal organs and structures. The procedure should not be painful. Many parts of the body can be investigated by ultrasound but the technique is commonly used to examine the abdominal organs liver and kidney , the pelvis, the heart and the major blood vessels. Other areas which may be examined include the eyes, breasts, and thyroid gland. Most pregnancies are now monitored by ultrasound examination to assess the age, health and position of the unborn baby.

Areas of the body which cannot be successfully examined by ultrasound are those covered by bone, for example the adult brain, and those filled with air, like the lungs. Abnormalities which may show up in ultrasound examinations include cysts, tumours and infections. Blockages in major blood vessels can also be detected. Ultrasound is a very safe technique and can be used to examine adults, children and babies. For most ultrasound examinations no specific care is needed before the test.

However, to examine certain areas of the body successfully, special preparation is sometimes required.

This scan takes place between 18 weeks and 20 weeks 6 days of pregnancy and is commonly called the week scan. It is also sometimes referred to as the mid-pregnancy scan. The scan looks for 11 different conditions in your baby and cannot find everything that might be wrong. In most cases the scan will show that your baby appears to be developing as expected but sometimes a condition is found or suspected. Some things can be seen more clearly than others.

Fetal heart scans

A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures.

When you go for a pregnancy scan, the sonographer a specialist trained in ultrasound scans puts ultrasound gel on your tummy and then moves a handheld probe across your skin. The first scan was to check the make-up of the baby – check that there was a heartbeat, check that their arms, legs, head and measure the length of the baby from crown to rump really. So that was what the first scan was for – a basic sort of check really – and I was told that they’re limited in what actually, if there is any abnormalities with the baby at that stage, they’re very limited about what they can actually find, it’s not really till the week scan where they’ll pick up most things, especially congenital deficiencies.

The nuchal scan, we were given a leaflet, sent a leaflet by the hospital before we attended. My husband and I both attended the scan. We were very well informed about what to expect. We knew before going in for the scan, that if there was a problem we would be told there and then, and we would then be advised to take further tests, such as amniocentesis. So we were very well informed about what to expect and how the scan would take place.

The dating scan Many people couldn’t remember much about early scans, particularly if they had experienced other scans later on in pregnancy. People we interviewed expressed a range of views about the purpose of the week scan. Some thought it was to verify the pregnancy, work out likely dates for the baby’s birth and give parents a chance to see the baby.
